About Spoken Word: "The Wind in the Willows", by Dyan Jones
(First published in Mosaic, September 2011)
What an exceptional way to celebrate children’s literature – featuring the story as an exciting stage production. The Words Aloud Spoken Word Festival cultivates audiences of all ages, and each year pairs with the South Grey Bruce Youth Literacy Council to bring the brightest and best family theatre opportunity to the elegant Victoria Jubilee Hall in Walkerton. The word is out – this year’s well-anticipated production is The Wind in the Willows, one of the most revered children's books of all time.
Rag & Bone Theatre has transformed Kenneth Grahame's beloved classic, The Wind in the Willows, from the page to the stage. Their trademark interplay of puppetry, acting, props and live music make for an intimate and innovative theatre experience for all ages. They skillfully create simple, aesthetically beautiful effects that encourage imagination and new ways of perceiving the world. Pair this artistry with the compelling The Wind in the Willows and a true delight awaits the audience.
Rag & Bone Puppet Theatre of Ottawa has toured across Canada and the U.S. since 1978. ACTRA awarded puppeteers John Nolan and Kathy MacLellan are joined by multi-instrumentalist Russell Levia in productions of exceptional creativity and value for young audiences. Last year Rag & Bone Theatre brought us The Flying Canoe. Back by popular acclaim, this year they invite us to ramble the riverbanks, the open road and the wild wood with Rat, Mole, Otter and Toad and to laugh open-heartedly.
To enter the hallmark Victoria Jubilee Hall is to suspend disbelief and open your imagination with music, magic and mayhem. The Words Aloud Spoken Word Festival's Children's Performance is anticipated and cherished by families each year. Share this experience with your own children or borrow a few privileged youngsters, for this true all ages theatre event. Enrich the experience by reading The Wind in the Willows before attending the theatre for full story immersion. Our regional libraries and independent booksellers will be happy to provide you with the book.
Coupled with this performance is Wind, the themed writing contest for young people with four winning entrants sharing their crafted words.
